PURPOSE The Cockatiel Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation established for the advancement of the cockatiel, Nymphicus hollandicus, as a companion, aviary and exhibition species; to provide resources to the community and for educating members on companion bird care, improved breeding practices, the study of color mutations, genetics, and show standards that promote the health, fertility and longevity of the cockatiel. The Foundation supports a national adoption/placement program, youth education, closed banding and record keeping, veterinary and avicultural research, legislative awareness as it pertains to cockatiels, consistency and fairness in exhibition and judging, a national show, annual affiliation with the American Federation of Aviculture, Inc., and to encourage ethical conduct and constructive interactions between its members and other aviculturists. CF is inclusive of all aspects of cockatiel culture, from the hobbyist breeder and first time cockatiel owner to the professional aviculturist and advanced exhibitor.

The Mission of the Cockatiel Foundation, Inc. is to provide resources to the cockatiel community, promote education, ethics in exhibition and good fellowship among all cockatiel enthusiasts.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to our website and share with you a vision of the objectives and
goals of the Foundation. The Cockatiel Foundation, Inc. is an educational nonprofit organization that
was founded to serve as a resource to the cockatiel community. Whether a proud owner of a lovely
companion pet cockatiel - a hobby breeder, a professional aviculturist, or an exhibitor of novice or
quality show stock - our activities will include new, expanded programs in cockatiels never addressed
before by any cockatiel organization.
One of our major goals in progress is the Adoption/Placement Program for rehoming cockatiels in
permanent, "forever homes," which has never before been attempted by a cockatiel organization on a
national scale. CF is currently working on setting up and training foster homes around the nation to
act when needed. This program, open to members, will be launched in the coming months as positions
are placed and our volunteers are trained. Please look for updates on the Adoption Program page
(click on the navigation bar) of this site.
Another focus is on the next generation of cockatiel enthusiasts by creating the Cockatiel Youth
Education Program. This program is modeled after the AFA Youth Aviculture program, originally
developed for the American Federation of Aviculture, Inc. (but adapted by its same author specifically
for cockatiels), both of which will have far-reaching consequences nationwide, because our Youth
Members are the future of aviculture. Updates will soon appear on the Youth Education page (click on
the navigation bar).
Another worthwhile endeavor is our Lost and Found Center that will advertise and report the finding
of lost cockatiels. The objective is for CF to become the place for cockatiel owners and breeders to
turn to for updates on sightings, cockatiel escapes, recently found birds - and hopefully happy
reunions! More details will follow in future ad campaigns and media coverage. Please let others know
that this program exists as a free service to the cockatiel community at-large.
Please visit our ARTICLE CENTER where you'll find a wealth of up to date educational articles
featured in the Pet Center, Breeding Center, Color Mutations & Genetics Center, Nutrition & Diet
Center, Exhibition Articles Center,(and other topics coming soon) many of which have been published
internationally.
CF is offering the first professional journal for cockatiels with major feature articles written by
professional authors who are recognized experts in their field: veterinarians, lawyers, bird
behaviorists, published book authors, international aviculturists and more. These acknowledged
experts provide major features on companion bird care, cockatiel behavior, nutrition, veterinary care,
avian research, youth education, adoption programs, breeding husbandry, color mutations & genetics,
exhibition & show standards, and more. Color covers and inside color photography feature familiar
and rare color mutations with a CoverbirdTM feature fully described in every issue. The featured
CoverbirdTM photos display exquisite colorful cockatiel mutations, gracing every issue, explained in
full detail. Additional columns round out this unique publication by contributing hobby breeders,
sancutaries, companion bird owners and show exhibitors.
When you join a cockatiel organization, you expect to see cockatiel color mutations - and CF will not
disappoint! We have a plethora of mutation photographs to view in our Color Mutations Center and
all over the website, and many new and rare mutations will be featured in upcoming issues of the
Cockatiel Chronicle!
CF is applying for tax-exempt status, which, once obtained will allow us to fundraise for numerous
worthwhile projects. CF plans to eventually fundraise for cockatiel research in the areas of avian
medicine, nutrition and husbandry management in order to advance the well-being of all cockatiels
that will benefit from results of such studies. It takes time for a new organization to receive such status
and we will keep you appraised of our progress.
CF offers a number of additional services to our members, from closed coded CF legbands, member
advertising, aviary registrations, sanctuary registrations, cockatiel counselors to answer your personal
questions, and more services listed on our Membership Benefits Page.Check it out in addition to
opportunities to enter our FREE photo contest with winning entries published in the Cockatiel
Chronicle and on the CF Website in celebration of our First Birthday!
CF is currently creating a new "Show Standard for the Ideal Cockatiel" that will, in addition to the
physical beauty of the bird, differ by taking into consideration the health, fertility, longevity, and
other attributes of the cockatiel that will be reflected in the weighted standard. It can be done and CF
is doing it. CF will offer a Judges' & Exhibitor's Handbook that will enable the Foundation to present
fair, ethically run, open cockatiel shows in the future. The Foundation is now focusing on our youth
members in a part of the show that will emphasize education and companion bird care. CF's goal is to
offer high ethical standards and fairness for all exhibitors showing cockatiels, opportunities for the
Novice, and education for Youth Exhibitors in CF shows - included in our affiliation packages.
In order to accomplish our many goals, the Cockatiel Foundation has applied and received nonprofit
status as an educational Corporation and our documents with the IRS are in progress. This has been
very fast progress considering our recent beginning. The CF co-founders, officers and chairs have all
been working very hard to make the Foundation one we can all be proud of! As we grow, the
Foundation will consider additional programs and areas of interest expressed. There will always be
new ideas, talents and abilities that will benefit the Foundation ~ for we are becoming a Foundation.
A “foundation” is defined as “an institution financed by a donation or legacy, as to aid research,
education, or the arts.” A fundamental aspect of the Foundation is to become a mainstay of support to
aid cockatiel research, science and education once we receive our status.
CF is utilizing the talents and abilities of its members to organize a completely new venture that
will accomplish many unique goals, set a new standard, and raise the bar for innovative
programs that will directly affect and benefit the welfare and future of the Cockatiel.
We hope you look over our programs, membership benefits and join our many worthy causes for the
cockatiel! Come JOIN US!
